Madeira's Hidden Gem: Hotel Orquidea's Paradise Awaits! (A Slightly Rambling, Honest Review You Won't Find Anywhere Else)
Okay, alright, buckle up buttercups! Because I'm about to try and tell you everything you need to know about the Hotel Orquidea's Paradise Awaits! in Madeira. And let me tell you, it’s a lot. This isn't your sterile travel blog review, this is the real deal, warts and all. I sweated through the logistics, ate the buffet, and even (gulp) hit the gym. So, here goes…
First things first: Accessibility. This is HUGE. I’m going to be brutally honest. While the hotel claims to have "Facilities for disabled guests", and even mentions access like "Elevator", it's Madeira, and Madeira is mountains. Be prepared for some inclines. I'd recommend contacting the hotel directly and being very specific about your needs. Don't assume anything! I’m not a wheelchair user, but I could imagine some areas – the outdoor pool (I'll get to that glorious view later!) – might present a challenge depending on the level of assistance needed. Important Tip: Ask about the Car park [free of charge]. Is it truly accessible to the hotel? How far away are accessible rooms from the parking? This is the beginning of your accessibility deep-dive!
Right, let's leap into the Cleanliness and Safety aspect because, let's face it, it's on everyone's mind, especially after… well, you know. I have to say, the Hotel Orquidea’s commitment here is pretty good. They're all over it. I’m no germophobe, but I appreciated the Anti-viral cleaning products, Daily disinfection in common areas and the Hand sanitizer everywhere. They also are using Professional-grade sanitizing services, and the staff actually look like they know what they're doing. They seem to be following this Hygiene certification. There were Staff trained in safety protocol. I'm assuming these were the ones wearing masks, and not just the cleaning staff. I wasn't brave enough to opt-out of the Room sanitization opt-out available – fear wins!
Internet, Internet, Everywhere!
Okay, internet. I rely on it. Desperately. And thankfully the Hotel Orquidea's got you covered. Free Wi-Fi in all rooms! is a lifesaver. And I mean free, in the sense that you don't have to sign up for a subscription. I'm not sure if I used the Internet [LAN] so much and I did make use of the Internet services they provide. It was there, reliable, and didn’t drive me crazy. Wi-Fi in public areas was also decent, which is a must for these days, isn't it?
Dining, Drinking, and Snacking: A Foodie's Adventure (with a few hiccups)
Alright, let’s talk food. This can make or break a holiday, right? The Hotel Orquidea offers a mixed bag, honestly.
- Breakfast (the Good): The Breakfast [buffet] is decent, and I do mean decent. The Asian breakfast was a nice touch, though I wasn't fully onboard, but really, I'm Western through and through. There was a Breakfast service, and a Breakfast takeaway service too, which is great if you have an early excursion planned. The Coffee/tea in restaurant was okay, I'm no connoisseur, and there was a Coffee shop in the hotel itself.
- Lunch/Dinner (Mixed Bag): The Restaurants are okay. There’s an A la carte in restaurant, which, let me tell you, is a welcome change from the buffet after a few days. I took a look at the Asian cuisine in restaurant, and as my wife will tell you, I'm a soup fiend. So, I was happy to taste the Soup in restaurant. Their Desserts in restaurant were…well, let's just say they weren't the highlight. But there was a Bottle of water on offer, which is essential. They've also got a Poolside bar which is essential to make the most of all the Swimming pool [outdoor]. The Vegetarian restaurant option may be helpful, but I did not try it.
- The Room Service (the Saving Grace): Let's face it: Room service [24-hour] is the ultimate luxury. And the Hotel Orquidea comes through here. Especially after a long day exploring. A little Snack bar to keep your hunger at bay might be handy, but I did not try it.
Things to Do & Ways to Relax: Paradise Found (Mostly)
Now, for the things that make a holiday… well, a holiday! And here, the Hotel Orquidea shines.
- The Pool With a View: The Pool with view is THE thing. You HAVE to experience it. Stunning. Seriously. I spent hours there, just gazing out at the scenery. It's the kind of view that makes you forget all your worries.
- Spa Time: Now, I'm not a spa aficionado, but I did dare to try the Spa. I got talked into a Massage and it was… heavenly. I'm a convert. They also had, Sauna, Spa/sauna, and Steamroom for all the spa enthusiasts. And if those weren't enough, there were Body scrub and Body wrap options, though I didn't try them.
- Fitness: I did force myself to go to the Fitness center which was, well, a gym. But it did the job! There's a Gym/fitness for the hardcore. If you have time for a Foot bath, I'm sure that could be helpful too.
Rooms: Comfort and Charm (and a Few Quirks)
My room situation was pretty good. Air conditioning was a god

Okay, buckle up buttercups, because we’re about to dive headfirst into the glorious, slightly chaotic reality of… my Madeira Island adventure, specifically the Hotel Orquidea. This ain’t your perfectly curated travel blog, folks. This is the real deal. Prepare for some Portuguese sunshine, questionable decisions, and a whole lotta me.
Day 1: Arrival & The Great Balcony Debacle (Hotel Orquidea - Check-in, Funchal exploration)
- 8:00 AM (ish) - Lisbon Airport - Delayed Takeoff: Right, so, first hurdle. Lisbon Airport. Beautiful city, terrible airline (looking at you, TAP, you’ve given me a reason to cry before I leave Portugal). The plane was late. Of course. I’m starting to think my entire life is just one long, running-late joke. But hey, at least the coffee was decent. And the croissant? Sublime. Almost made up for the fact I missed the scenic flight to Madeira.
- 10:00 AM (ish) - Arrival, Airport Chaos, & First Impressions: Finally! Madeira! The air… oh god, the air! Smells like flowers and freedom. Made it through baggage claim somehow, and then… the rental car. OMG. It’s a tiny, bright yellow Fiat 500. I’ve never been more terrified and delighted. I called it "Big Bird" for the rest of the trip.
- 11:00 AM (ish) - Hotel Orquidea - Arrival & Check-In: Alright, finding this hotel was an adventure in itself. Winding roads, blind corners, and a GPS that seemed to enjoy sending me in circles. But finally, I saw it! The Hotel Orquidea. It's… well, it's… charming. In a slightly faded, retro sort of way. Think faded wallpaper, well-loved furniture, and the kind of staff who make you feel like you're visiting family. Found out it had the best view.
- 12:00 PM - The View! & The Balcony Debacle: Checking into my room… and HOLY SMOKES. The view! The Atlantic glittered before me. This is what dreams are made of. Except, oh god, the balcony. The tiny, teetering, slightly-wobbly balcony. I spent the next 2 hours (and a significant portion of my sanity) trying to figure out if it was safe. I was convinced I was going to send myself tumbling to a certain doom. Ended up having a full-blown panic attack. And yes, I may have shed a few tears. It was my last trip I could not be as tough as other people. The view was still amazing though and I could not forget about it though!
- 2:00 PM - Lunch at a Local Spot: After surviving the balcony experience (mostly), I was ravenous. Found a little restaurant, "Maria's," near the hotel. Didn’t understand a word on the menu, but pointed at something that looked vaguely appealing. Turns out to be a local fish stew. It was the most delicious, salty, fishy, wonderful thing I have ever eaten.
- 3:00 PM - Funchal City Exploration: Backed Big Bird out of the ridiculously tight parking spot. The city was so beautiful! Wandered through the charming streets of Funchal, the capital, past the colorful flower stalls, the sweet scent of the fruit market. Stopped for a "poncha" (Madeira's signature drink – basically, liquid sunshine with a kick) at a bar so small, you could practically touch the whole thing. Met a lovely old woman who spoke no English, but somehow, we still managed to chat for what felt like hours with smiles and gestures.
- 7:00 PM - Dinner at The Crispy Rooster: Found a charming place with chicken. So good.
- 9:00 PM - Back to the Hotel & Balcony Assessment (Round 2): I went back to the room with my balcony, looking at that view again. It was breathtaking. I just have to get over this silly fear. Maybe tomorrow.
Day 2: Levada Walk & Lemon Cake Euphoria
- 8:00 AM - The Hotel Breakfast: Breakfast at the Orquidea was… well, let's say it was a mixed bag. There was fresh fruit (amazing!), stale bread (not amazing), and coffee that tasted suspiciously like dishwater (again, not amazing). Ate anyway. Fuel is fuel.
- 9:00 AM - Levada Walk Prep: I learned that 'Levada' is a fancy word for a man-made water course and the paths that follow them. I, being the intrepid adventurer that I am, decided to hike one. I bought the right shoes and a hiking stick. I mean, I packed my hiking gear. Okay, I got the hiking pole.
- 10:30 AM - Levada Walk – The Start: Found the trailhead. It was beautiful. Lush green forest, the sound of water trickling… completely serene.
- 11:00 AM - Almost Died: The path was narrow, and the drop was steep. I swear, I almost fell into the abyss at least five times. I probably shouldn't have looked down. Or looked up. Or looked at anything, really. But the views were spectacular, and the air was so fresh.
- 1:00 PM - The Picnic: Found a quiet spot, ate the cheese and bread I’d bought earlier and enjoyed the most amazing view I had every gazed at.
- 3:00 PM - The Return: After the most terrifying, yet rewarding, hike of my life, I went back to town.
- 4:00 PM - Lemon Cake. And More Lemon Cake! I went for Madeira's famous lemon cake. I thought this was it. I knew this was my destiny. And it did not disappoint. It was heaven. I may have eaten three pieces. It was so delicious.
- 7:00 PM - Dinner at The Crispy Rooster: The chicken was better this time! It was still good!
- 9:00 PM - Balcony Assessment (Round 3) & Quiet Wine: The balcony. We met. I did. I sat. But I did not fall.
Day 3: Wine Tasting, Abandoned Churches, and Goodbye
- 8:00 AM - Hotel Breakfast (Again): Same as yesterday. More fruit. More stale bread. More dishwater coffee.
- 9:00 AM - Wine Tasting! Time for wine! So many vineyards, so little time! I had my driver take me to a place up high. The wines were good. I definitely bought a bottle (or two… maybe three).
- 11:00 AM - Abandoned Church: My driver then took me to an abandoned church, which was beautiful.
- 12:00 PM - Back To Hotel: It's been a good trip. Today is the last day, for a while.
- 1:00 PM - Restaurant by the sea: Just a nice chill day.
- 3:00 PM - Back To The Hotel: I said goodbye to the balcony. I will miss her. And the mountains. And Portugal.
- 4:00 PM - Goodbye: The flight. The airport. I am already sad.
This is just a snapshot, of course. Each day was filled with a thousand tiny moments, the good, the bad, the slightly terrifying, and the absolutely gorgeous. Madeira. It was perfect.
